RTSP Setup Guide

Arlo RTSP Setup

Arlo is primarily a cloud-first system, but select Arlo cameras (Pro 3, Pro 4, Ultra, and Ultra 2) do support local RTSP streaming when used with the Arlo SmartHub (VMB5000). This guide covers how to enable local streaming and add your Arlo camera to SmartRTSP on iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

How to Enable RTSP on Arlo Cameras

SmartHub (VMB5000) Required

Arlo's local RTSP streaming feature requires the Arlo SmartHub (model VMB5000). The older Arlo base stations (VMB4000, VMB4500) and plug-in devices do not support local streaming. Arlo Pro 3, Pro 4, Ultra, and Ultra 2 cameras are the models that work with this feature.

1

Ensure you have an Arlo SmartHub (VMB5000)

Check that you have the Arlo SmartHub model VMB5000 — not the older VMB4000 or VMB4500 base stations. The SmartHub has a USB port on the back and can be identified by checking the model number printed on the label. Plug-in base stations do not support local RTSP streaming. If you have an older base station, you will need to upgrade to the SmartHub to use RTSP.

2

Enable Local Network Access in the Arlo app

Open the Arlo app on your iPhone or iPad. Go to Settings → My Devices, then select the camera you want to enable local streaming on. Scroll down to find Local Network Access and toggle it on. You will be prompted to set a local access password for this camera — this password is separate from your Arlo account password and is used specifically for RTSP authentication.

3

Find your Arlo camera's local IP address

Once local streaming is enabled, the Arlo app may display the local IP address in the device settings. Alternatively, check your router's DHCP client list — look for a device with the Arlo camera's MAC address. Assign a static IP (DHCP reservation) in your router to prevent the address from changing. The RTSP stream is served directly by the SmartHub, not the individual camera.

4

Add to SmartRTSP using the RTSP URL

In SmartRTSP, tap + → Manual and enter your Arlo RTSP URL. Use your Arlo account email as the username and the device-specific local password you set in the Arlo app:

rtsp://user@arlo.com:LocalPassword@192.168.1.x:554/live

Note: Arlo does not support ONVIF, so ONVIF auto-discovery will not find Arlo cameras. Manual URL entry is required.

Arlo Models That Support Local RTSP

Only specific Arlo camera models support local streaming when paired with the SmartHub (VMB5000). Arlo Essential, Go, and Doorbell cameras do not support local RTSP.

Arlo Model Local RTSP SmartHub Required
Arlo Pro 3 Yes (with SmartHub) VMB5000
Arlo Pro 4 Yes (with SmartHub) VMB5000
Arlo Ultra / Ultra 2 Yes (with SmartHub) VMB5000
Arlo Essential No
Arlo Go 2 No

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Arlo support RTSP?
Limited support — Arlo Pro 3, Pro 4, Ultra, and Ultra 2 support local RTSP streaming when paired with the Arlo SmartHub (VMB5000). This is not native RTSP in the traditional sense — it requires enabling "Local Network Access" in the Arlo app. Most Arlo cameras (Essential, Go, Doorbell) do not support RTSP at all. All Arlo cameras remain cloud-first; local RTSP is an optional add-on feature.
Do I need a SmartHub for Arlo RTSP?
Yes — the Arlo SmartHub (VMB5000) is required for local RTSP streaming. The SmartHub acts as a local bridge between your Arlo cameras and your network, enabling the camera's stream to be served as a local RTSP feed. The older Arlo base stations (VMB4000, VMB4500) do not support local streaming. Plug-in cameras like the Arlo Essential Wired also do not expose an RTSP endpoint.
What credentials do I use for Arlo RTSP?
For Arlo local RTSP streaming, use your Arlo account email as the username and a device-specific password you set when enabling Local Network Access in the Arlo app. This password is separate from your main Arlo account password. If you have not set a local access password, go to the Arlo app → Settings → My Devices → [Camera] → Local Network Access to configure one.
Are there RTSP-native alternatives to Arlo?
Yes. Reolink, Hikvision, and Amcrest all provide RTSP support out of the box with no SmartHub equivalent required. These cameras expose an RTSP endpoint by default, support ONVIF auto-discovery, and work seamlessly with SmartRTSP on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. For a wire-free battery camera with RTSP, Reolink's Argus series is a popular alternative.

Looking for RTSP-Native Cameras?

If you prefer cameras with native RTSP support that don't require a SmartHub or cloud account for local viewing, these alternatives work directly with SmartRTSP:
