Identify the camera and its management family
Record the camera model and firmware before changing any streaming settings. A directly addressed camera, an Alta Video installation and a video-management server are not interchangeable endpoints. A server login or cloud identity does not necessarily provide credentials for a local camera stream.
The camera web-interface guide distinguishes primary, secondary and tertiary streams and explains unicast and multicast options. Choose the stream and delivery mode that match your installation. Do not enable multicast as a general repair step; it depends on the network as well as the receiving software.
Obtain and test the supplied RTSP address
- Put the viewing device on a local network permitted to reach the camera and identify its current IP address.
- Open the camera web interface with an authorized account and locate the RTSP Stream URI controls described in the guide for that model.
- Use Generate RTSP Stream URI when available. If that button is absent, inspect the automatically generated URI shown by the interface instead of inventing a path.
- Select the intended stream and copy the complete URI, including its existing path and query parameters. Check the local account required to view it.
- Add the address and credentials in SmartRTSP. Confirm a live image and reconnection before using the stream in a multi-camera layout.
Preserve the stream settings other systems use
Changing the camera’s frame rate, compression or secondary encoder may also affect an existing recorder. First inspect the current configuration and choose an already enabled stream. A smaller secondary stream can be useful for a grid, but its availability and format must be checked on the device.
If the copied URI includes a stream-selection parameter, preserve it. The URI is a request for a particular resource, not just the camera’s network address. Removing the suffix can change the requested stream or make the request invalid.
Interpret failures without widening the claim
| Observed result | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Web login works, RTSP is unauthorized | Check that the same local user has streaming permission and that the credentials reach the camera endpoint. |
| Copied URI produces no picture | Regenerate the URI and confirm its stream, compression and current port. |
| A cloud-managed camera behaves differently | Follow the Alta-specific instructions and available local streaming controls. |
| Live video works | Still test audio, PTZ, metadata and recording-related functions individually. |
Check each feature independently
Start on the same local network with the exact model, firmware and account permissions. A working video stream does not prove support for ONVIF discovery, pan or tilt, two-way audio, events, or every recording feature. Test the features you need in your installed SmartRTSP app.
Keep camera credentials private. Do not expose camera ports to the public internet just to test local viewing. Manufacturer cloud accounts, device accounts and generated sharing links are not interchangeable.
Frequently Asked Questions
Must every Avigilon camera use the same primary-stream path?
No. Obtain the address from the camera’s own interface or the official instructions for that product family.
Why is Generate RTSP Stream URI missing?
The cited guide describes interfaces that display an automatically generated URI instead. Check the model’s interface rather than assuming that the missing button means no streaming support.
Does documentation support mean this model was tested with SmartRTSP?
No. Sources were checked on 2026-10-18; physical-camera operation and each required feature still need verification on your installation.
Official sources and scope
Read the documentation for the exact model before changing settings. Manufacturer menus, firmware and service availability can change. These sources explain the published connection conditions, not independently verified SmartRTSP hardware compatibility.
