RTSP Setup Guide

Ubiquiti UniFi Cameras — RTSP Streaming Guide

Use the stream URL generated for the selected camera and quality in your current UniFi Protect installation. Anonymous Snapshots is a still-image feature, not the RTSP enablement procedure. Verify the exported protocol and actual viewing-platform support before relying on playback.

Generated stream URLs are not camera-ID templates

Protect integration documentation describes generated RTSPS stream URLs for camera quality selections. The returned or displayed URL is the connection address. A stream token is not simply a camera ID, and the console login should not be inserted into an example unless the actual documented connection method requires it.

Copy the whole address, including any query parameters. Do not publish it in screenshots, public support messages or website examples. Regenerating or disabling sharing can invalidate a saved URL, so check that the exported feed is still enabled when a previously working connection stops.

RTSPS, RTSP and snapshots are different

Ubiquiti lists Protect port 7441 for RTSPS and 7447 for RTSP in its port reference. This is a service-port reference, not a promise that an unencrypted alternative is enabled for every generated encrypted feed. Do not merely change rtsps to rtsp, replace the port or remove query parameters without a documented output for your installation.

Anonymous Snapshots concerns a still image. It is not required by this guide and should not be enabled as a substitute for stream sharing. An encrypted output also requires a viewer that handles the actual encryption and media configuration; a camera feature alone does not establish viewer compatibility.

Prepare a local viewing test

  1. Confirm the camera model, Protect console and installed Protect version. Check the camera is online in its normal Protect view.
  2. Open the selected camera settings and locate the live-stream sharing or RTSP/RTSPS output controls available in that version. Menu labels and available outputs can change.
  3. Enable the required output and select the desired quality only if it is offered for that camera. A visible Protect live view alone does not prove that external sharing is enabled.
  4. Copy the complete generated URL. Treat its stream token as a secret; do not replace it with a camera ID or add guessed username/password text.
  5. Check whether the actual SmartRTSP platform and version can open the exported protocol and encoding. RTSPS support is not promised by this guide; verify playback before purchase or deployment.
  6. Test on a trusted local network using the host supplied by Protect. Verify the right camera view and sustained playback, and keep a record of the working configuration without exposing the token.

Do not mix Protect import and export support

Ubiquiti also documents adopting supported third-party ONVIF cameras into Protect. That is an incoming-camera workflow. It does not mean that Protect exposes every adopted camera as an ONVIF device to another viewer or guarantees the same exported stream features for every model.

Older standalone UniFi camera instructions can refer to different firmware and direct-camera paths. Do not apply those paths to a current Protect-managed installation without matching documentation. A successful video connection does not establish PTZ, events, talkback or all Protect features in another application. Verify each required function separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Anonymous Snapshots the RTSP switch?
No. A still-image snapshot setting is not the RTSP or RTSPS stream-sharing control. Use the output settings offered by the current Protect camera configuration.
Can I build the URL from the camera ID and console password?
Do not guess it. Copy the complete generated URL and preserve its stream token and query parameters. Its authentication mechanism need not be a camera username/password pair.
Can I convert every RTSPS URL by changing the port?
No automatic conversion is promised. The Ubiquiti port reference lists 7441 for RTSPS and 7447 for RTSP, but it does not prove that both endpoints are enabled for a particular stream. Use only an output documented and available in your installation.
Does this page guarantee SmartRTSP RTSPS support?
No. Verify the exported scheme, encryption requirements, encoding and actual playback on the SmartRTSP platform and version you intend to use.
