Choose the camera family before choosing a path
The V2008PTZ-IR manual documents stream1, stream2 and stream3 paths. Vicon also publishes an older support reference with different paths and ports for Surveyor HD, V92X, V96X, fisheye and IQ families. Those examples describe their named products and should not be combined into one brand-wide default. Read the model from the physical label and confirm the installed firmware in the camera interface.
An existing Vicon installation may expose video through a recorder or management platform. Decide whether you have permission to connect directly to the camera, then obtain credentials for that endpoint. A management-platform login does not automatically authorize a direct camera session.
Prepare an authorized local connection
- Find the camera address in the installation records or router device list, then verify that your viewer can reach that address on the local network.
- Open the camera interface using an authorized account. Record the configured RTSP port and the enabled stream names without changing working recording settings.
- Select an enabled H.264 stream for the initial playback check. Note its resolution, frame rate and audio configuration so later tests use the same profile.
- Enter the documented URI in SmartRTSP, provide the camera credentials, and confirm a moving live image before adding more cameras or higher quality streams.
A documented example, not a universal template
For the V2008PTZ-IR covered by the linked manual, stream1 is a documented path. Replace CAMERA_IP with that camera address and use its configured port and authentication. For a different family, request the URI through ONVIF when supported, or consult its own manual rather than repeatedly trying unrelated Vicon paths.
rtsp://CAMERA_IP/stream1Video, PTZ and analytics require separate checks
Successful RTSP playback establishes a video connection. It does not demonstrate preset control, optical zoom, analytics events or recording retrieval. For a PTZ installation, confirm the account has the necessary control permission and that the viewer supports the camera service being used. Keep a working video profile available while checking additional capabilities one at a time.
Resolve a failed stream without resetting the installation
For repeated authentication failures, check the local account and any account lockout before retrying. For a missing stream, verify the family-specific path and enabled encoder. If authentication succeeds but the image is absent, compare codec and transport settings with the working camera interface. Avoid factory resets as a first diagnostic step because they can remove recorder registration and network settings. Check each feature independently
Start on the same local network with the exact model, firmware and account permissions. A working video stream does not prove support for ONVIF discovery, pan or tilt, two-way audio, events, or every recording feature. Test the features you need in your installed SmartRTSP app.
Keep camera credentials private. Do not expose camera ports to the public internet just to test local viewing. Manufacturer cloud accounts, device accounts and generated sharing links are not interchangeable.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does every Vicon camera use stream1?
No. Vicon documents several URL and port families. Use the exact model manual or the URI returned by an authorized ONVIF session.
Should I use my recorder password?
Only when the stream comes from that recorder. A direct camera stream normally requires an authorized account on the camera itself.
Does an RTSP picture prove PTZ compatibility?
No. Verify control services, permissions and each required PTZ operation separately from video playback.
