How RTSP authentication works
RTSP is an application-layer protocol for setting up and controlling real-time media delivery. A camera or recorder is the RTSP server; your app is the client. When the camera requires authentication, the client presents the account it is allowed to use before the live stream starts. The exact exchange and supported authentication method are determined by the camera or recorder firmware.
This is separate from whether the camera has an RTSP URL. A correct address can still fail if RTSP is disabled, the account lacks stream permission, the password changed, or the device uses a separate account for its local stream or ONVIF service.

Set up a secured local RTSP connection
- 1. Update the camera and replace factory credentials. Install current firmware, create a strong unique password, and remove unused accounts. Do this before creating a stream URL or adding the camera to a viewer.
- 2. Enable RTSP for the exact model. Some products expose RTSP by default; others require a local-stream, NAS, ONVIF or NVR setting. Check the vendor documentation for your model and firmware.
- 3. Prefer a dedicated, least-privilege stream account. If the camera or recorder can create a viewer account, use one that can view streams but cannot change device settings. Keep the administrator account separate.
- 4. Add and test the camera on the LAN. Use ONVIF discovery when it is supported, or enter the local address, port, stream path and account in a trusted RTSP viewer. Test both main and sub-streams only on your private network first.
- 5. Use VPN for remote viewing. Keep RTSP, ONVIF and web-management ports off the public internet. Connect through a trusted VPN to reach the same local address remotely.
Handle passwords and RTSP URLs carefully
Some applications accept a URL shaped like rtsp://user:password@local-address/path. Prefer a viewer that stores credentials in separate fields. Never paste a real credential into a support post, chat, screenshot, browser history or shared document.
If a password contains characters such as @, :, / or ?, a URL may require encoding. Use the app's separate account fields when possible; otherwise consult that viewer's URI guidance rather than weakening the password.
Local video, private by design

Check the exact stream, not just the brand
A brand can use different RTSP paths, roles and account rules across models, firmware and NVR channels. Confirm the exact SKU and current documentation.
Try ONVIF discovery
A conformant ONVIF camera may return its current stream URI and media profiles on the same LAN. ONVIF does not replace RTSP media delivery, but it can remove manual path guessing.
Separate connection from video issues
An accepted login does not guarantee compatible video. Check codec, audio, main versus sub-stream, bandwidth and the transport options that the camera and viewer support.
Avoid account lockouts
Many cameras temporarily lock an account after repeated failures. Stop, verify the account in the camera settings, and wait for the documented cooldown instead of cycling guesses.
