RTSP Setup Guide

Tapo RTSP Setup

Stream a compatible TP-Link Tapo camera to SmartRTSP on iPhone, iPad or Mac. RTSP and ONVIF use a separate local Camera Account, not your TP-Link cloud login.

Important: Create a dedicated Camera Account in Advanced Settings. Do not use your TP-Link ID email and password. Support still depends on the exact model, hardware version, region, and firmware.

How to Configure Tapo for RTSP

1

Open the Tapo App

On your iPhone or Android device, open the Tapo app. Tap the camera you want to configure to open its live view.

2

Create the Camera Account

Tap the gear icon (⚙)Advanced SettingsCamera Account. Create a dedicated 6–32 character username and strong password that are different from your TP-Link account login.

3

Find the camera's local IP

In the Tapo app → camera settings → Device Info, note the local IP address (e.g. 192.168.1.105). Make sure your iPhone and the camera are on the same Wi-Fi network.

4

Add to SmartRTSP

Open SmartRTSP and create a new camera. Enter the local Camera Account credentials, not the TP-Link cloud login:

rtsp://camera_user:camera_password@192.168.1.105:554/stream1

Supported Tapo Models

Most mains-powered Tapo cameras support RTSP and ONVIF Profile S, but compatibility is model- and firmware-specific. Current TP-Link documentation lists C425, C460, C660, C645D, and D230 as battery examples without continuous RTSP. D235, D225, and TD25 provide RTSP only when hardwired for power with the required jumper and Always-On mode.

Tapo-Specific Setup Tips

Use stream2 for stability

If /stream1 feels too heavy on Wi-Fi or disconnects in multi-camera view, switch to /stream2. The substream is often smoother for grids and older routers.

Reserve a static IP

Tapo cameras often appear to "break" after a router reboot because the IP changed. A DHCP reservation prevents SmartRTSP from pointing at an old address.

Tapo RTSP is usually local only

Do not expect the RTSP URL to work from cellular or another network. For remote access, use VPN instead of exposing camera ports directly to the internet.

Credentials are account-based

If SmartRTSP says the login is wrong, re-check the separate Camera Account first. Reset it without special characters if another client cannot authenticate either.

FAQ

Why does my Tapo RTSP stream keep disconnecting?
Make sure your iPhone/Mac is on the same local network as the camera. Tapo RTSP only works locally — it does not support remote streaming outside your home network.
What credentials do I use for Tapo RTSP?
Use the local Camera Account created under Advanced Settings. Do not use your TP-Link ID email and password.
Does Tapo support ONVIF?
Most compatible non-battery models use ONVIF Profile S on service port 2020. Profile S does not provide two-way audio, and dual-lens models expose only the wide-angle lens through ONVIF. Verify the exact model and firmware in the official TP-Link compatibility FAQ.
