Important: Create a dedicated Camera Account in Advanced Settings. Do not use your TP-Link ID. Support depends on model, power mode, hardware, region and firmware. Check the Tapo compatibility matrix before setup.

How to Configure Tapo for RTSP
Open the Tapo App
On your iPhone or Android device, open the Tapo app. Tap the camera you want to configure to open its live view.
Create the Camera Account
Tap the gear icon (⚙) → Advanced Settings → Camera Account. Create a dedicated 6–32 character username and strong password that are different from your TP-Link account login.
Find the camera's local IP
In the Tapo app → camera settings → Device Info, note the local IP address (e.g. 192.168.1.105). Make sure your iPhone and the camera are on the same Wi-Fi network.
Add to SmartRTSP
Open SmartRTSP and create a new camera. Enter the local Camera Account credentials, not the TP-Link cloud login:
Check compatibility before troubleshooting
Most plug-in models support local protocols, but battery, doorbell, hardwired Always-On and dual-lens behavior is model-specific. Keep those purchase and topology decisions in the dedicated matrix.
Tapo-Specific Setup Tips
Use stream2 for stability
If /stream1 feels too heavy on Wi-Fi or disconnects in multi-camera view, switch to /stream2. The substream is often smoother for grids and older routers.
Reserve a static IP
Tapo cameras often appear to "break" after a router reboot because the IP changed. A DHCP reservation prevents SmartRTSP from pointing at an old address.
Use the private endpoint locally or through VPN
The private RTSP endpoint is normally reached on the LAN. For remote access, connect through a VPN instead of exposing camera ports directly to the internet.
Credentials are account-based
If SmartRTSP says the login is wrong, re-check the separate Camera Account first. Reset it without special characters if another client cannot authenticate either.
