Cam v3 firmware: modern support and the older branch
Wyze announced RTSP for Cam v3 firmware 4.36.16.5654 on 2026-02-02. The announcement requires app 3.9 or later for RTSP. It also explains that app 3.8.5 or later is needed to receive that firmware because of security changes; that lower update threshold does not replace the RTSP feature requirement.
This applies to Cam v3, not automatically Cam v3 Pro. Use the current release notes when choosing firmware, and check that your installed version still exposes the RTSP setting. The version above is the documented introduction, not a recommendation to downgrade.
Wyze also has older separate Cam v3 RTSP firmware instructions. Those describe a different firmware branch and its limitations. If your camera already provides native RTSP, begin with its current menu rather than an old microSD flashing tutorial.
Cam v3 setup checklist
- In the Wyze app, confirm that the device is Cam v3 and note its installed firmware. Update the Wyze app and review current firmware release notes.
- Open the camera settings, then Advanced Settings, and check for RTSP. If the setting is absent, check both app and firmware before changing firmware branches.
- Enable the available RTSP feature, set camera streaming credentials, and copy the generated URL exactly. These credentials belong to the camera stream; do not substitute your Wyze account password.
- Connect the SmartRTSP device to the same LAN, choose manual camera entry, and enter the generated URL. Check the live image before adding the camera to a larger grid.
- After confirming video, test audio if needed, close and reopen the viewer, and confirm it reconnects. Reserve the camera address in the router if address changes cause later failures.
If the v3 URL will not play
| What you see | What to check |
|---|---|
| RTSP menu is missing | Confirm Cam v3 rather than v3 Pro, the app version, and the firmware installed on this camera. Recheck the current manufacturer release notes. |
| Authentication fails | Use the streaming username and password created for this camera. Re-copy the generated URL after changing them. |
| URL starts with rtsps:// | Check encrypted-stream support in the installed viewer. This guide does not confirm SmartRTSP RTSPS compatibility; changing only the URL spelling is not a verified fix. |
| Playback stops after an address change | Compare the address in the camera app and router with the saved entry. Update the entry or use a router DHCP reservation. |
| Video works but a feature is absent | Test that feature separately. RTSP video does not establish ONVIF discovery, talkback, events, or every app feature. |
What an RTSP connection does and does not confirm
A working video stream does not establish ONVIF discovery, pan/tilt control, two-way audio, camera events, or every recording feature. Add this camera by its generated URL and verify each feature you need in your installed SmartRTSP app.
Start with the camera and viewer on the same local network. Keep camera credentials private, reserve its address in your router if needed, and avoid exposing its streaming port to the internet. These instructions are based on published documentation; SmartRTSP has not independently verified this model on a physical camera for this guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Wyze Cam v3 support RTSP without Docker?
Wyze officially announced native RTSP in production firmware 4.36.16.5654. Use the RTSP setting on a compatible installed firmware and Wyze app 3.9 or later; Docker is not a prerequisite for that route.
Is the old v3 RTSP firmware the same as native RTSP?
No. The separate firmware article describes an older branch. The 2026-02 production announcement documents a newer native route, so select instructions by the firmware actually installed.
Can I use a universal v3 substream URL?
Use the address generated for your camera. This guide does not establish a universal second stream or infer one by changing the path.
Sources and verification scope
Sources were checked on 2026-10-18. Firmware menus and release channels can change. These documentation checks are not a physical camera test or a guarantee that every feature works in SmartRTSP.
