Why Industrial Users Choose SmartRTSP

No per-camera cloud fees

Industrial setups often run 8–16+ cameras. Cloud subscription costs multiply quickly. SmartRTSP connects directly to cameras on your local network — zero ongoing fees regardless of how many cameras you have.

Works with professional PoE cameras

SmartRTSP is fully compatible with Axis, Bosch, Hikvision DS-2CD series, and Dahua PoE cameras — the professional-grade hardware used in commercial and industrial installations.

Footage stays on-site

Local recording means no footage leaves the site network. Critical for projects with security or confidentiality requirements — construction contracts, government sites, or facilities with compliance obligations.

AI motion detection for after-hours alerts

Set up motion detection on perimeter cameras to receive iPhone notifications when activity is detected after hours — catching unauthorized access, vandalism, or equipment theft in real time.

Common Industrial Use Cases

1

Construction site perimeter monitoring

Cover site entrances, fencing perimeter, and staging areas. After-hours AI motion alerts notify the site manager immediately if someone accesses the site outside permitted hours — reducing theft and unauthorized access.

2

Warehouse loading dock monitoring

Monitor truck arrivals, departures, and loading activity at the dock. View live footage from the site office or iPhone while off-site, and keep a local recording log of all dock activity for liability and audit purposes.

3

Manufacturing floor oversight

Place cameras at key production line points for quality control observation and process verification. View the floor remotely from the site manager's iPhone without needing to physically walk the line.

4

Equipment yard asset tracking

Monitor high-value equipment storage areas to track asset movement. Alert on after-hours activity near equipment zones to prevent unauthorized removal or vandalism of expensive machinery.

Recommended Cameras for Industrial Use

POE

Axis & Bosch — Tier-1 industrial PoE cameras

Axis and Bosch produce professional-grade IP cameras engineered for industrial environments. Fully ONVIF-native, weatherproof to IP66/IP67, and available in fixed, PTZ, and thermal variants. These are the cameras used in airports, warehouses, and infrastructure — and they work seamlessly with SmartRTSP.

HIK

Hikvision DS-2CD Series — Commercial-grade at accessible price

The Hikvision DS-2CD range offers commercial reliability at lower cost than Axis. 4K models are available. Full RTSP and ONVIF support makes them auto-discoverable in SmartRTSP. Ideal for budget-conscious industrial deployments that still need reliable outdoor performance.

Avoid Wi-Fi cameras in industrial environments

Industrial environments — construction sites and warehouses — have high levels of radio frequency interference from equipment, metal structures, and other wireless devices. PoE cameras with wired Ethernet connections are significantly more reliable. Always use a managed PoE switch for multi-camera industrial setups.

Setting Up a Multi-Camera Industrial System

1

Install a managed PoE switch

A managed PoE switch powers and connects all cameras via a single Ethernet run. 8-port and 16-port PoE switches are standard for industrial camera deployments. Connect the switch to your site network or NVR.

2

Run cameras to switch — assign static IPs

Connect each camera to the PoE switch. Assign static IP addresses to each camera through the camera web UI or your router's DHCP reservation feature. Static IPs prevent cameras from changing addresses after network restarts.

3

Connect NVR or direct IP access

Connect an NVR for on-site recording and storage, or connect cameras directly for IP access only. SmartRTSP can connect to both NVR channels (via RTSP channel paths) and individual camera IP addresses.

4

Run ONVIF scan in SmartRTSP

Connect your iPhone to the site network (via Wi-Fi access point on the same subnet), open SmartRTSP, and tap Scan. SmartRTSP will discover all ONVIF cameras on the network automatically and retrieve their stream URLs.

5

Set up AI alerts for after-hours monitoring

Enable AI Motion Detection on perimeter cameras in SmartRTSP's camera settings. You'll receive an iPhone notification within seconds of any motion event detected — even when the app is running in the background.

Cost Comparison: SmartRTSP vs Cloud Services

Cloud camera subscriptions are priced per camera per month — costs that compound significantly at industrial scale:

SmartRTSP Cloud Service (~$10/camera/mo)
8 cameras — Year 1 $0 $960
8 cameras — 5 years $0 $4,800
16 cameras — Year 1 $0 $1,920
16 cameras — 5 years $0 $9,600

SmartRTSP is a free download with an optional one-time in-app purchase. No recurring subscription. No per-camera fees. Hardware costs (cameras, PoE switch, NVR) are a one-time investment.

Remote Site Access

SmartRTSP works on the same local network as your cameras. For monitoring from off-site — from the main office, from home, or while traveling — a VPN provides secure remote access.

Set up a VPN on your site router (WireGuard is the recommended option for its performance and simplicity). Once connected to the VPN from your iPhone, SmartRTSP sees the site cameras as if you're physically on-site. This works over LTE, 5G, and office Wi-Fi.

VPN recommendation for site access

WireGuard on a site router (Firewalla, Ubiquiti, or pfSense) is the most reliable approach. Tailscale is a good alternative for quick setup. Avoid port-forwarding RTSP ports directly to the internet — always use a VPN.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many cameras can I monitor with SmartRTSP?
SmartRTSP supports an unlimited number of added cameras — you can add as many as your site has. The grid view displays up to 4 cameras simultaneously. Swipe between camera groups to view other cameras. For industrial setups with many cameras, you can organize cameras into named groups by area or zone.
Does SmartRTSP work with an existing NVR?
Yes. SmartRTSP connects to NVR channels via RTSP. Use the NVR's IP address with the channel path — for example, /Streaming/Channels/101 for channel 1 on a Hikvision NVR, or /cam/realmonitor?channel=1&subtype=0 on a Dahua NVR. You can also use ONVIF scan if your NVR supports it.
Can multiple managers view the same cameras?
Yes. Each manager installs SmartRTSP on their own iPhone or Mac and adds the same camera RTSP URLs or performs their own ONVIF scan on the site network. Multiple users can connect to the same cameras simultaneously — most professional cameras and NVRs support several concurrent RTSP connections without any extra configuration.
Does SmartRTSP work over cellular from off-site?
SmartRTSP requires network access to the cameras. For off-site monitoring via LTE or 5G, set up a VPN on your site router (WireGuard is recommended). Once connected to the VPN from your iPhone, SmartRTSP works identically to being on-site. This approach avoids exposing camera ports to the public internet while still enabling full remote access.
