Not all IP cameras work the same with RTSP. Some brands make it easy — RTSP is enabled by default, ONVIF works out of the box, and the stream connects in seconds. Others require firmware tricks, have non-standard implementations, or don't support RTSP at all. This guide recommends specific models that work well with SmartRTSP, organized by category and use case.
What to Look for in an RTSP Camera
ONVIF allows SmartRTSP to auto-discover the camera and retrieve its RTSP URL automatically. Cameras without ONVIF can still work, but require manual URL entry.
H.265 delivers the same video quality as H.264 at roughly half the bitrate. Saves storage on NVRs and reduces network load. Both are supported by SmartRTSP.
Power over Ethernet cameras get power and data from a single cable. More reliable than Wi-Fi for permanent installations — no wireless dropouts or range issues.
A lower-resolution secondary stream (sub-stream) saves bandwidth on mobile. Essential for remote access over cellular. Most NVR-grade cameras have this; some budget Wi-Fi cameras don't.
The RTSP stream should be accessible without a proprietary app or cloud account. Some brands lock down RTSP or require firmware modifications to enable it — check before buying.
Prefer cameras that allow you to set a local username and password for RTSP access, independent of any cloud account. This keeps access working if the manufacturer's cloud service changes.
Best Budget RTSP Cameras
Under $50, RTSP enabled by default, ONVIF supported.

Cameras to Avoid for RTSP
These popular consumer cameras do not support standard RTSP, or the support is so limited that they cannot be recommended for use with SmartRTSP.
Ring cameras use a proprietary protocol and are cloud-only. There is no RTSP access, no local streaming option, and no ONVIF support. Ring cameras cannot be used with SmartRTSP.
Arlo cameras are fully cloud-dependent with no local network access. They do not expose an RTSP stream. Not compatible with SmartRTSP.
Google deprecated Nest's local RTSP support. Newer Nest cameras are cloud-only and not compatible with SmartRTSP. Older Nest Cam models with the original app may have limited RTSP.
Wyze cameras require a separate RTSP firmware to be manually flashed — RTSP is not enabled by default. The process works but requires extra steps. See the Wyze guide for details.
